Ed Wood is labeled the “Worst Director of All Time”, but that really isn’t legal. These movies not only feature Bela Lugosi in his final roles, but they are also enormous entertainment in a “so awful it’s respectable” kind of blueprint. For a movie to be the worst movie of all time, it can’t have any entertainment value whatsoever. I’d rather discover an Ed Wood movie than a Freddie Prinze Jr. movie any day.
The describe on these DVDs is grainy, and that can be a noble or a unpleasant thing depending on who you are. For me, it’s a obedient thing because it helps to conceal some of the weaker special effects.

P.S. As of this review, Amazon.com says it will lift two to four weeks for this item to ship. That’s ridiculous. I ordered this location from another online retailer, and I got it three days later.
This site is unbiased about perfect, even more so when compared to the previously-released, “Worst of Ed Wood” box position, this spot fixes everything that was evil with that one.. firstly, the name of that other area, which always objective rubbed me the putrid blueprint.. distinct, they’re “awful” films, but they’re also some of the most bright things you’ll ever sit through, and whether they’re bright in the design Ed intended or not, he is the one who made the films, and now this DVD company is making money off his work, so it unbiased seems really gross for them to have a slam like that in the real title of the box.
From the packaging– pink angora with octopus tentacles– to the extras, this situation is what that other dwelling should have been, and at about half the brand! The sixth disk includes a very informative documentary, but not impartial that, it has a big amount of special features, including commentary on the documentary and Ed’s long unavailable first short film, and commentary on that too.. and galleries of additional archive footage, etc.. This is truly a special-edition kind of treatment, and not at all what you’d question for DVD’s of this particular kind of film. Then there is a second 2-hour documentary on the Notion 9 disk.. this documentary was the only special feature on the previous box, and if you watched it by itself you would probably accept the feeling that it’s honest scratching the surface.. but now in this modern box place it provides a perfect companion to the other burly documentary.. the two of them together truly compose a worth-while viewing experience, because they each often yelp opposite versions of the stories of Ed’s life, and interview different people at different points in their lives.. Watching the two of them together, in combination with Tim Burton’s Ed Wood film, you can really begin to fabricate your beget opinions on Wood in an informed manner, rather than honest spitting help one other person’s views.. All together these features give you depth rarely seen even on big-budget special editions of major films.
And, maybe more importantly than all of that, this film includes the 5th of Ed’s “major films”– The unofficial sequel to “Bride of the Monster”.. the film never released in Ed’s lifetime because he didn’t have the money to obtain it developed: “Night of the Ghouls”. Without that film, the other box spot was unbiased kinda incomplete. I’m totally cheerful with this package.. can’t consider of anything awful to say about it, except that I feel kinda sorry for the people who paid $90 to regain that other box state. Oh well, live and learn.. don’t feel bitter.. bag this one too. And while you’re at it, grab Tim Burton’s Ed Wood.. which is really a big film in it’s beget plot, and a very qualified DVD edition, and long over-due for release on the format.

This series continues to be one of the funniest series to near out recently. If you’ve enjoyed Excel Saga - Complete Collection or Sgt. Frog: Season 1, Piece 1, you’ll pick up a kick out of this. The writing, for the most piece, continues to be top notch, although it some of the originality of the episodes from the first disc seems to be lacking.

For the most share, the series is appropriate to explore with my 10 and 13 year frail daughters. One particular episode (#10) seemed to written/directed by someone different than the rest and had more fan service scenes (one very scanty clad/well-endowed “guest” character) than the rest of the episodes. This episode did not seem to fit with the rest of the episodes and wasn’t particularly well done.
The lack of english dubbing was surprising but I believe the series would lose something without the new Japanese track. My kids have no anxiety keeping up with it.

It’s a 51 Episode series that Bandai is releasing in 7 eps at a time.
It’s over priced even for a (Hyb) but this is a subtitle only and the
only possible plus is the lower compression then the import which
is about $40-$45 for the hole series. I enjoyed the series and if it
were dub in English I’d select it again. Bandai has delayed the
release of it’s dubbed titles to release these overpriced subtitle
dvd’s.

I’d never even heard of this one until it came out on DVD-R courtesy the Warner Archives. I gave it a try and I was overjoyed. I’ve seen every pair of the three main stars here together in different films before (Bette Davis, Leslie Howard, Olivia De Haviland), but never all three at the same time. The pairings I am speaking of were all in serious films, and it is spacious to gaze these three try out their amusing chops and try them out together. Leslie Howard and Bette Davis hardly ever got a chance at this type of role, and Olivia De Haviland did so on several occasions, but so few people remember those performances.

The film concerns a pair of Shakespearean actors. Basil Underwood (Leslie Howard) and Joyce Arden (Bette Davis) . They are interested on and offstage, and are constantly fighting and making up. One night Marcia West (Olivia De Haviland) sees a performance of Romeo and Juliet and falls instantly in treasure with Basil, she even goes backstage and tells him so. This has Marcia’s boyfriend in a alarm and he asks Basil to advance to the West estate and behave so badly as to ruin Marcia’s feelings for him. Basil, unprejudiced recently making a resolution to not be so selfish, decides to do this as a valid deed. However, Joyce follows Basil to the estate, and Marcia does not react as planned to Basil’s actions. For that matter, Basil doesn’t act as Basil planned. Also a delight is Eric Blore as Basil’s valet. He steals every scene.
The audio and video were very estimable on this one. I didn’t glimpse any of the skips or freezing that DVD-R’s are celebrated for having, but then it could unprejudiced be that I had a edifying copy. Highly recommended.

I can remember as a kid laughing my head off in the theater watching Who’s Minding the Store? (not included in this situation), but it wasn’t until I saw Martin and Lewis on the Colgate Comedy Hour shows on DVD that I had any notion of his range and versatility. Then I saw the first Dean and Jerry movie, My Friend Irma, a film based on a radio reveal, and thoroughly forgettable but for one thing: the Martin/ Lewis interplay. Paramount long ago saw what I’m honest finding out, and the duo made sixteen movies together.
Only their last film in that series is included in this station, The Stooge, from 1953, in which, as Leonard Maltin has notorious, Lewis shows hidden depths as an actor. His first solo outing, The Fine Delinquent (1957) is surprisingly poignant, with only intermittent amusing bits. This unimaginably rich status of ten films from 1953 to 1965 may not convert staid critics on this side of the Atlantic, but it certainly will expose the Lewis lover’s cup of tea. The films are on ten single sided DVDs in five slimline cases which fit in a box status. The slim cases are too thin to comfortably beget two discs, however, and plastic pieces had broken off in all the cases I opened. The DVDs were collected OK though (single sided discs are tougher than double sided ones), and except for that scrape this is an attractively packaged place.

The ten films are in widescreen, four in sunless and white and six in color. In chronological order they are: The Stooge (1953, shaded and white), The Ravishing Delinquent (1957, shadowy and white), The Bell Boy (1960, shaded and white), Cinderfella (1960, color, with Ed Wynn as the fairy godfather), The Errand Boy (1961, shaded and white), The Ladies Man (1961, color), The Nutty Professor (1963, color, special edition), The Patsy (1964, color), The Disorderly Clean (1964, color, with an opening song by Sammy Davis Jr.), and The Family Jewels (1965, color, in which Lewis plays six roles) . There’s not grand information on the box, but many films include trailers and extra features, listed inside the DVD cases. The portion de resistance is a personal stamp from Jerry slipped into the box, expressing his hope that the Martin/ Lewis films will also soon manufacture it to DVD. A sentiment we fans, mon ami, fervently echo.
I’m thrilled that Paramount has boxed up their 10 Jerry Lewis titles and nick the tag. The titles include The Bellboy, Cinderfella, The Blooming Delinquent, The Disorderly Well-kept, The Errand Boy, The Family Jewels, The Ladies Man, The Nutty Professor, The Patsy and The Stooge.
I’ve been entertianed by most of these films - having checked out the single releases - but was unwilling to grasp them for $15 a pop. But now the tag is lawful and I will be able to torture my children with Jerry on the loose.
While the bonus features on most aren’t overwhelming, they seem enlightening to understand what Jerry was doing at the time. He was an innovator using video monitors to encourage whine himself.
I do hope Paramount is able to save out a helpful shameful priced boxset of the Jerry Lewis - Dean Martin comedies.

It is a must pick for any Sherlock Holmes fan, or anyone who enjoys classic mysteries, who does not already have all of these improbable films.

When these were first released on DVD it was truly a cause for celebration, as it represented the completed painstaking restoration of all 14 classic films by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.
The UCLA Theatre Archives did an award-winning job in restoring and thus preserving these substantial films from 35mm master copies into the digital format, sometimes literally being forced to section together the celluloid remnants that they found.

It took the archivists several years to complete the entire project, but was well worth the wait. The result is that the dark and white images seem as current today as when the films were released to theatres more than 40 years ago. The archivists deserve a hearty thanks from all movie fans concerned with preserving America’s classic cinema heritage for future generations to delight in.
This boxed station includes a facinating feature on what it took to restore the films. Well worth watching, it’s improbable that it’s included.
Atmospherically, “The Hound of the Baskervilles” is arguably the best of the 14 Holmes films, and the only one based specifically on a Conan Doyle chronicle. It, and “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,” are the only two “period” films in the series and rush longer, the remainder taking plot in then modern-day England and America of the leisurely 30s and early 40s and accelerate about 90 minutes each.
Because the “regular” series was made during World War II, there are many references to it, as well as some facinating patriotic drum beating on the fraction of Holmes that concludes many of the films.
In both “Hound” and “Adventures,” Holmes dons his deerstalker cap, popularized by unique Strand Magazine illustrator Sidney Paget who made the image synonymous with the sizable detective. It is inviting to imprint that in the first of the non-period films in the series, Holmes reaches for his handy deerstalker, but is stopped by Watson. “Holmes,” Watson said, “you promised.” Leaving the deerstalker on the peg, Holmes grabs a “unique” hat instead.
Rathbone is especially titillating in “Hound of the Baskervilles,” and is partnered by Bruce, who plays a bumbling Watson throughout the 14 films that was not Conan Doyle’s vision of the enormous sleuth’s biographical “Boswell.” Nonetheless, the pairing is hugely consuming and satisfying.
The creation of the moor, the detestable grimpen mire and truly grisly hound remains extraordinary and does worthy to engender this tale as one of Conan Doyle’s most favorite with modern-day
readers and viewers alike.
The final scene represents the only reference any of the 14 films made to Holmes’ “seven-percent” cocaine habit as Rathbone asks Bruce to retrieve “the needle.” The scene, criticized as too risque by 1939 audiences, caused the film’s producers to form a conscious decision to omit any additional mention of Holmes’ recreational drug consume in future outings.
All of the films are really exquisite and acquire up wonderfully well under order viewings. For me, two of the best films of the “regular” series are The Scarlet Claw, where a village believes the supernatural is at work killing people, and Sherlock Holmes Faces Death, where Holmes must solve the riddle of the Musgrave Ritual.
Not matter your age, these films insist hours of enjoyment, and thanks to the UCLA Theater Archives and MPI, will for generations to near. I only wish that Rathbone and Bruce had lived to scrutinize their mammoth work released to fresh audiences in this pristine DVD condition.
Philip St. John Basil Rathbone (13 June 1892, Johannesburg–21 July 1967, Unique York) and William Nigel Bruce (4 Sep. 1895, Ensenada–8 Oct 1953, Santa Monica) starred in 14 Sherlock-Holmes films as, respectively, Holmes and Watson. The first two films (1939) are period pieces whereas the last 12 (1942-46) are contemporary (”novel”) .
“The complete Sherlock Holmes collection” is a 6/06 reissue on 5 DVDs of a 14-DVD situation (in 5 boxes) previously issued by MPI 10/03-4/04. The reissues by MPI, which involve restorations of the 1942-46 films, have been critically acclaimed. This review thus objective compares the 2006 and 2003-04 sets of reissues (this review also supplements the previous two reviews by R. Smith, 7/18, and E. Hornaday, 4/10) :
OVERVIEW: 2006 reissue = 14 films on 5 DVDs (stare below for track listing) in 1 box 1 1/4″ wide VERSUS 2003-04 reissue = 14 films on 14 DVDs in 5 boxes totaling 4 3/8″ wide.
DVD CONTENT: Same in both reissues except the 2006 box station has for “Dressed to waste” an added (i.e., unfortunately, not on the earlier issues) commentary by actress Patricia Morison and Holmes scholars David Gregory and Richard Valley.
BOOKLET/INSERT AND TEXT CONTENT: The 2006 box area has 2 pages of text besides the front screen. The 2003-04 reissues have 5 booklets (”production notes”) written by Richard Valley, 8 pages each for “Hound” and “Adventures,” 16 pages each for volumes 1-3. Although there is some overlap material, these 64 pages have many pictures and have worthy information on the 14 films, including cast listings.
SUMMARY OF PROS AND CONS OF 2006 BOX SET:
PROS: (1) mighty less expensive–$129.99 list ($119.99 Amazon in 7/06) versus $249.90 list ($224.95 Amazon in 7/06) ; (2) takes about 3″ less shelf space; (3) more convenient to hobble only 5 DVDs than 14; (4) added commentary for “Dressed to destroy.”
CONS: (1) no booklet insert and thus almost no information on the films included–a major deficiency; (2) appearance rather stark, with only 1 describe of Rathbone on the box (a pic of Bruce should also have been included) ; (3) flimsy cardboard case with 5 slim obvious plastic DVD holders that fold out clumsily with the support of a cloth puller and that are awkwardly hinged with only cellophane tape (and thus becoming easily unhinged, that is, DVD trays 1-4 separating from tray 5) .

“In the Face of Unfavorable” is an well-behaved film about President Ronald Reagan’s values, achievements, and career. It is also a substantive sage of 20th century foreign policies and history. Reagan supporters will devour this movie and others will regain it worthwhile. It is appropriate for veteran academic settings as well, including courses on comparative political systems, foreign policy, economic history, leadership, etc. This film has the potential to attend solidify President Reagan’s area in history as one of America’s greatest presidents.

My wife and I saw it in the theater and were rapt for the entire length of the movie. This DVD is a cherished member of my documentary collection. Due to the distinct budget constraints I give it a production quality of about 3* and a stammer quality of 5*.

The music is orchestral and deeply intriguing, evoking both pathos and heroism at appropriate times in the presentation. There are no jarring techno-funk or rock-n-roll cuts for those who are scrupulous of such things.
The material is perfect for Middle School and High Schools students. More depth would be required for college but the 4 step process Regan and his men devised to fight the “Wrong Empire” might do wonderful undergraduate paper material for American or World History 101.

This is the Flash Gordon inspiring series that aired on Saturday mornings from 1979-1981 and is one of the best shows that ever came out of the Filmation studios. The animation is high quality for its time and the stories were very good to the unusual 1930’s laughable strip. To top it all off this DVD dwelling will give you a host of goodies you hardly ever notice for a cartoon DVD release from the 80’s.

Do any of you remember the cartoon Tarzan: Lord of the Jungle wait on in the 70’s? The same company, Filmation, created the Flash Gordon sharp adventures. What that means is the artwork is of a pleasant quality. We’re talking movie quality (like the better stuff from Heavy Metal) with vibrant colors and even some gripping animation. A lot of this animation came from rotoscoping and it looks awesome (rotoscoping is a process where proper actors/stuntment are filmed and then traced over on cel animation to do very fluid movement in animation) . While not all the animation was rotoscoped it makes up for the fact that 70’s television animation was cramped to a splendid obscene framerate due to budget constraints. In the demolish you win something that blows away anything on TV at the time.
You gotta luxuriate in the attention to detail that you catch from a cartoon from this era, but there are drawbacks. Sometimes you gawk the same rotoscoped action again and again. Not that spacious of a deal when you realize each episode came out weekly. What really bugged me was the consume of stock sound effects that really didn’t fit the grandness of the exhibit. Now and then some cheesy “kid display” boing sound and such would pop up and that would waste the whole polished feel I accumulate from the indicate.

While the script isn’t as sophisticated as what you gaze in more fresh shows like the Batman Challenging Series you have to sustain in mind this was made in 1980 when cartoons weren’t taken seriously at all. UPDATE: Although this is being marketed as “The Complete Series” it unfortunately does not believe the 1982 feature length piquant movie “Flash Gordon: The Greatest Adventure of All.” From what I have heard and read, this was a truly record film that begins in Warsaw, Poland which is being annihilated by Hitler’s bombers. Flash’s dying friend leaves him with a message for Dr. Hans Zarkov: “Mongo”. Flash takes a plane where he meets Dale Arden. The plane is caught up a violent thunderstorm, which turns into a devastating meteor shower, crushing one of the plane’s engines. Flash and Dale bail out, but a meteor brushes their chute, sending the duo plummeting to the earth. A mysterious purple beam plucks them out of the stormy night and gently settles them onto the ground. They have to bustle for shelter and glean Zarkov in his laboratory who rushes them into his rocketship, informing them that the meteors are no accident; it is in fact a strategic attack. As they spirit away in his rocketship, they are swept towards Mongo and adventure. Noteworthy of the legend that begins in the first few epsiodes of the series has been dramatically altered so this is more of an alternate storyline which seems to more closely resemble the situation from the 1980 live-action film. Apparently BCI does not have the rights to “Flash Gordon: The Greatest Adventure of All” so that is why it is not included. Hopefully, someone will release it seperately soon but it definite would have been nice to have included it in this “Complete” position.

Here is a fellow with no particular skills in life, no staunch direction, no ambition — in short, something we are ostensibly taught from the git-go to despise. His crime? Parking meters.

The film draws a simple case: Luke as a quietly selfish free spirit vs. the system. But instead of loading it down with symbolic baggage, the movie works by making its case with drama and often ample humor. The egg-eating contest, for instance — it finds fair the upright balance between humor and drama to execute its points, and ends with Luke passed out on the bed in a Christlike pose. (Whether or not that’s a deliberate shot is begin to speculation; it certainly looks like it was mild, but it’s not held too long to force the voice on us.)
The best thing about the movie is the performances. Nobody hits a erroneous stamp or an unconvincing turn. A vast chunk of George Kennedy’s reputation comes from this film, and you can stare why: he’s more or less the grunt foil for Paul Newman throughout the movie, commenting on and playing off the man’s actions. But stare how many others are also in here: Strother Martin (as Captain), Dennis Hopper, Harry Dean Stanton… a veritable roll-call of actors who’re all independently watchable and gripping.
This movie is anything but frosty. The characters are rough, irascible, and awkward. The setting is realistic and harsh. It takes state in the scorching sun and humidity. There’s many a scene of sweat and overheating men. Luke, though, is wintry. He’s the figure of composure; he’s classy, lustrous, proud, and witty, but he rarely talks, keeping unruffled. Or he’s independent free man who won’t let anyone find him down.
There’s a scene when he bluffs his device to victory in a poker match, thus his nickname “chilly hand Luke”. Another scene has him fighting with another inmate until he’s nearly unconscious, but he never surrenders. Yet another has him eating 50 eggs in an hour for a bet, and he doesn’t give up. And I deem this is the metaphor for the rest of the film. You can either peer him as a cocky stubborn man, or more appropriately, a man who won’t give up his freedom. He’s thrown in prison and chain gang labor for a case of petty vandalism during a drunken stupor, yet he never utters a word about it, even during the most humiliating or painful punishment, but his conviction and sentence are hardly a matter in this film. Here is a man who is terrorized and dysfunctional (as the myth slightly exposes), but is already in an advanced position of personal freedom. Though he’d like to be living a normal life, searches for it, and deserves as considerable, he doesn’t need it. He’s spiritually and mentally invincible, and eventually it leads to his ultimate fate.

Cool Hand Luke is a top-notch film. It’s one fourth romantic, three fourths gritty reality. Paul Newman and the pleasing cinematography are the romance. Newman nearly carries the film. Here’s this movie star, a charismatic leading man who liberally uses his smile to glean himself through scenes, but he immerses himself into his character. I mediate Luke is one of the greatest, most complex male characters to grace the conceal, and Newman is really the only actor who could ever do him justice. But he isn’t playing Newman, he’s playing Luke, every run of Luke. He IS Luke, he is this renegade rebel, this charming shipshape Dan, and this tragic everyman. Newman’s supporting cast is marvelous, in one of the best acted films I’ve ever seen. George Kennedy is wonderful as the only gargantuan supporting character, though the rest of the cast do their utmost to fit their roles, especially the various immoral and slimy wardens, and they do it beautifully. No actor wastes his time on conceal. They develop the atmosphere.
I unbiased have to mention the dialogue. This is one of those films with wonderful dialogue. Nothing is sappy or soupy. It embraces wit and logic, a shapely razor sharpness, and a down to earth realism. Every sentence is perfectly placed, there are no superfluous words, every character with they’re possess style that peaceful allow them to sound like proper people. Kill of dialogue discussion.
This film is simple. It’s simply told, simply filmed, and on the outside it’s a simple legend, but I judge it delves a lot deeper than at first appearance. It’s unpretentious. Without us colorful it paints an environment, it paints a setting. It’s a movie with determined faintly stylized points and flourishes, with a bit of a Southern storytelling air and lilt to it, and a certain adore for fun. But it’s intense, from the acting, to situation twists and character developements, to minor “action” sequences (a movie populated by inmates and movie stars has to have some excitement), it has astounding depth in it’s subtle symbolism and it’s layered messages and it’s performances with their emotional tapestries. Thus, it has an substantial replayability quotient.
This is drama at it’s finest. It is a complex curious film that can gather under your skin in it’s rawness, but can detached entertain you, and send you into that dreamy mesmerized region of being in fear of a film and the characters portrayed in it.

I adore Robert Rodriguez movies and after hearing that he is the main director of Shorts (A Not-So Ample Story) then I had to search for it. I must admit Shorts is a lot better than I expected, its not perfect but its appetizing for the whole family. Its like one of the reviewers for this movie said, “not as trustworthy as UP or Smithsonian but better then other previous kid films (G-Force for example) .” Shorts is basicly like in between G-force, UP and Smithsonian. But fine enough for me to give this movie 4 out of 5 Stars at least. The adult humor in Shorts is better then G-Force. Obveiously because its Robert Rodrgiuez’s film. That and Robert Rodriguez at the slay credits has made some familiar music from his other adult films he has made. Giving Shorts music a more hardcore feel instead of regular kids music which I enjoyed from this movie, that and at the same time its elegant. Although there are a few amusing scenes that might sound too childish but that is also what I enjoyed about Shorts. The spot is nice and you might learn a few things about life (depending what you know) in this movie on the arrangement. The fable is out of order and divided into 5 Episodes. Shorts can be a estimable example why I luxuriate in Robert Rodriguez films and he is one of my accepted Directors. Kodos to Robert Rodriguez for making Shorts! Along with the above episodes, this DVD also contains a featurette called “Alfred Hitchcock Presents: A Peep Wait On” on the display. Compared to the Season Sets of “The Twilight Zone” (which ranges from $75-100), I feel the brand for this DVD is very decent and is worth buying.
All in all, this is a expansive release and I hope Universal will continue releasing more seasons of this note in the future.
I haven’t seen “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” since it was last shown on TV Land quite a few years aid. This reveal is one of the best anthology series ever and deserves to be shown and enjoyed. I have read that Hitchcock actually filmed two openings and closings for each episode. The ones Americans are familiar with feature Hitch sarcastically commenting on the show’s sponsors and TV in general. The other openings and closings were created for the European market and featured Hitch poking fun at Americans. I don’t know if any of these alternate scenes are included but they would be fun to explore.
A note trace of under $30 for 39 episodes of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” is a huge bargain compared to the ridiculously overpriced “The Twilight Zone” seasons. As great as I like “The Twilight Zone” I refuse to pay those prices. As for “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” I’ll be the first in line to topple my $30 for these mountainous shows.
